Finish the Year Strong: A Christian Man’s Guide to Stewarding His Body During the Holiday Season

Take Ownership of Your Health Before the New Year

The holidays are upon us, and many men feel their energy, focus, and discipline slipping—or have no clue where to even start.

This season is an incredible time to honor God, enjoy family, and savor good food. I genuinely love the holidays! But for many years, they were also a trap for me—pulling me back into the same old, unhealthy habits.

I’d start out strong in May or June, gaining momentum and making real progress. Then winter rolled around… Thanksgiving hit… and suddenly everything fell apart. I’d undo months of discipline in just a few weeks.

Sound familiar?
If so, keep reading. I’m going to show you the same strategies that helped me enjoy my favorite holiday foods without wrecking my health—and that can help you do the same.

God has given us practical wisdom for overcoming these yearly cycles. Let’s dive into truth and learn how to break this pattern once and for all.

Why Stewardship Matters During the Holidays

“Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit…” — 1 Corinthians 6:19–20

As men, we’re called to lead—with strength, clarity, integrity, and discipline. Stewarding our physical health is part of that calling. It affects our energy, our focus, our relationships, and even our spiritual walk.

Too many men today settle for being weak, unhealthy, and undisciplined. But God didn’t design men to be passive or careless. He designed us to be strong in spirit, mind, and body. How can we lead in our homes, churches, and communities if we can’t first lead ourselves?

Stewardship matters all year, but the holidays demand extra vigilance. The environment is relaxed. Temptation is everywhere. Your ‘buddies’ want to eat and drink without restraint. Family may not share your goals. The treats are abundant—eggnog, pies, cookies, all of it.

None of these things are sinful in themselves. But the temptation to drift into laziness, gluttony, and indifference is very real. Stewardship requires awareness, intention, and discipline.

Step-by-Step Strategies for Holiday Body Stewardship

1. Move Intentionally Every Day (Even if it’s a Little)

Intentional movement keeps your mind anchored in strength and health. The less we move intentionally the more we compromise unintentionally. Even a short, simple workout shifts your mindset back into discipline.

2. Eat With Purpose, Not Just to Indulge

Don’t mindlessly eat whatever is in front of you. Be conscious. Be present. Scripture calls us to be sober-minded—this includes the way we approach food. Enjoy good meals, but don’t let impulsivity govern your choices.

1 Corinthians 6:12, All things are permitted for me”—but not all things are beneficial. “All things are permitted for me”—but I will not allow anything to control me.

3. Prioritize Rest

Rest is not optional. Lack of sleep spikes cortisol, lowers leptin, and sends you chasing sugar and carbs. It also destroys your motivation and weakens your resistance to temptation. Rest is biblical, don’t neglect it.

4. Leverage Brotherhood for Accountability

Accountability makes you stronger, not weaker. Whether it’s a trusted friend or a coach like me, brotherhood helps you stay focused and consistent.

“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” — Proverbs 27:17

5. Daily Reflection & Prayer

Stay close to God if you want to stay far from temptation. Daily prayer and reflection align your heart and mind with Him. Discipline isn’t always easy, but spiritual alignment makes it possible.

Conclusion

The holidays are an amazing season filled with joy, gratitude, celebration, and yes—great food. But they’re also a time when many men fall into laziness, gluttony, and lack of discipline.

God calls us to something greater.

Don’t let this year repeat the patterns of the past.

I challenge you: pick one habit—small, measurable, and sustainable—and do it consistently from now through the New Year.
Maybe it’s drinking a gallon of water, doing 10 push-ups a day, or walking 20 minutes. Start there. Be faithful. Build momentum.
